Popular Birding Festival Flies in New Direction
By Ric Zarwell
The Rivers & Bluffs Fall Birding Festival, headquartered at Lansing (Allamakee County), Iowa, has followed essentially the same 3-day format for each of the past seven consecutive years, attracting participants from states on all three coasts, and from more than two-dozen states in all. However, this year organizers have chosen to place greater emphasis on extended first-hand birding experiences in key Mississippi Flyway habitats.
For the 2010 event, indoor activities will be replaced with a wider variety of "Fall Migration Cruises" options onboard the heated and comfortable passenger boats of Mississippi Explorer Cruises. These large and stable boats with windows on all sides, are the most comfortable tourist boats on the entire Upper Mississippi River, and can hold up to 75 or so passengers with ease. Experienced birders and river naturalists will accompany each cruise and provide interpretation and assistance. Visitors will experience amazing close-up views of thousands of elegant Tundra Swans and hundreds of thousands of a wide variety of other waterfowl plus numerous Bald Eagles and other wildlife.
Scheduled Fall Migration Cruises will be offered on Saturdays and Sundays on three consecutive weekends, Oct. 30th and 31st; Nov. 6th & 7th; and Nov. 13th & 14th. Cruises will explore Pool 9 of the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, and will embark from the waterfront in Lansing, Iowa. There will be one cruise each day departing at 1:00 pm adn returning at 4:00 pm. Additional boats or cruises will be used or added if necessary. Fall Migration Private Chartered Cruises may also be booked by organizations or groups, or if there is sufficient public interest.
Reservations need to be made in advance, and cruises will be filled on a first come - first served basis.
